Christmas in November?

I was up at the shops today, only to realise this: The Christmas decorations are up already.
Now I’m in Australia at the moment, and Thanksgiving isn’t celebrated here, but isn’t it too early? While I love Christmas (in fact it’s my favourite holiday of the year), I think that every year the holiday seems to be drawn out a little further. Now seeming to last over two months long, you start to wonder why…?
I personally think Christmas has been extended as long as it has because it has become a retail holiday. Apparently it’s all about giving gifts and spending money on each other. And while I love giving (and, I admit getting them too) gifts, we’ve lost track of what the holiday is all about. I’m not going to sit and preach about how one should appreciate the true value of Christmas, but I wonder this:
Do you believe that the Christmas season has been over extended?

Here in the Uk the Christmas Goodies are out on the shelves from the end of October. I do believe that the Christmas saeson has been over extended and we get further and further away from it’s true meaning every year.
Stefan, I completely agree. In the UK stuff starts appearing in the shops in September. Being of a certain age I fondly remember less commercial times. Families together, without the need to buy exotic gifts etc. It’s a great holiday and apart from the appalling weather in the UK at that time I shall miss it this year. Mind you I plan to be on the beach Christmas Day firing up the bar-b-cue! Which I guess many of your countrymen will be doing too!
here in the philippines, the start of “ber” months signals the start of xmas. malls are starting to decorate around that time and xmas music are already played on radio stations.
thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment
have a great week ahead.
I know christmas has been over extended! If I wanted to, I could have started buying ornaments and the like at the beginning of October! I love Christmas and I will be putting up my tree the weekend of Thanksgiving but I totally agree that it’s a retail holiday. I think I really started noticing this last year and the year before.
And I don’t know how much this comes into play, but maybe they’re bringing it out so much earlier because of the economy??? I really don’t know.
the same here in Malaysia and we are a Muslim country!
Malls and shops have the decorations for Christmas up already. I know the Mall I work with ordered Christmas decorations 10 months ago, procuring them from China.
I definitely think Christmas has been overextended.
When do you think that started happening?
It may be a nostalgic delusion, but it seems to me that when I was younger the stuff didn’t start coming out until November. But now at some stores, I see it out in October or earlier.
I think it’s ridiculous.
I like the idea of November and December being Christmas months. Christmas trees, Christmas music, candy canes, gingerbread houses, etc.
It ruins all the fun and meaning when you start seeing that stuff before Halloween.
Like Liza said, the philippines (where I am from as well) starts Christmas early enough from the rest of the world… September 1st. That’s when retail stores “sabotage” the whole meaning of Christmas by putting out decors and ornaments and instill more commercialism to consumers! Not only that, radios and malls play Christmas songs the entire day, everyday until it’s really Christmas but by then you are so sick of hearing them!!
It started that way since Halloween wasn’t popular back then. Now, the Halloween and Christmas decors sort of just clashes with each other for attention.
Personally, I’d like to see shops start decorating in November. That’s about right I think to get that spirit going…
