That's so weird - I missed this post! I think because I was travelling in South Africa at the time and had limited internet access. Oh well.

Great post! I am going to NYC in a week so I will look out for those huge meals and perhaps I can comment more. This will be my first trip to the States.

I could write a post about why I prefer London to South Africa but it might become a small novel.

Stefan, You've got a great travel ethoes. Experiences and the memories that come with those experiences always last longer and mean more than any souvenir that can be packed in a suitcase.

One of my favorite memories from my last trip to Paris in January was standing under the Eiffel Tower at midnight while all the flashing fairy lights were going off overhead. We had paper mugs of hot mulled wine and the square underneath the tower practially to ourselves -- all pure magic.

If you've not booked your Paris hotel and don't mind a suggestion, Jay's on rue Copernic is worth every cent. Jay's is tiny boutique all suite hotel with the most incredible rooms and amazing staff who treat every guest like royalty. http://www.jays-paris.com/

Congrats on your upcoming wedding.

Hey Stef, I understand what you are talking about, not of the States but of Singapore when I went back for a visit. It's ironic that when I am in London, I can't wait to head back home but after spending just two weeks back home, I am reminded of all the reasons why I left in the first place and can't wait to return to London.

Like what Lynn pointed out in her comment (I guess Malaysia and Singapore are somewhat similar), I love the freedom and the anonymity (that I enjoy) over in London. Life is a bit slower but hey, you live only once so the last thing I want is to spend the better part of my day in the office, yah?

That said, I've only been to San Francisco and NYC in the States so it might not be appropriate to comment on the 'excesses' of America, though I have to agree that the food portions are massive.

Cheers,
C K

Hey Stef, I know exactly what you mean. Often, one is constrained by one's budget when it come to planning overseas trips. The tussle is between something tangible (money) and something intangible (the experience) and more often than not, the former will take precedence.

That said, I've not got a chance to Le Jules Verne. Hmm, might just do it on my next trip there. :)

First time coming across this blog!I am back in America for college after spending 15 out of 20 years abroad. I use to look forward to visiting the states so I could shop at a mall. Now I want to leave so badly. One of the biggest things I am not liking about the US is the food. It's always too salty, sweet, greasy, etc. The traffic in America is not that bad. Most of the places I've lived actually had worse traffic. Take Korea for instance where traffic laws are rarely enforced and a red light means speed up.

@Emm - Thank you! I don't believe it'd be substandard at all - in fact, I've heard the food is excellent. That said, US$300 or so per person for the gestation menu is steep, no matter where it is, or how good the food is. As for our trip, we're currently looking at Paris, then Florence, Venice, Lucerne, St. Moritz, then off to Barcelona, where I used to live to visit some old friends.

@Cashmere - I'm right there with you, though my fiance doesn't always agree.

@Just a Plane Ride Away - Thank you! I enjoy the research. It has worked out well, I'm taking care of the honeymoon planning, and she's taking care of the wedding details (which is fast approaching!).

Do you have reason to believe the meal would be substandard though?

I believe congrats are in order - a honeymoon in Paris - how lovely!! Where else are you thinking of going? The Alhambra Palace or the other Moorish palaces are known for their romance too.

I read about this too. It makes me crazy when they nickel and dime. I have to carry around five pounds of coins just to pay for parking at the grocery store. As for the trolleys, we have to pay for them in the States, so I was astounded that they were free to use here.
